Why I'll Never Write True "Romance"...Sunday Night Ramblings

Why I Will Never Write True "Romance."....Sunday Night Ramblings by Jake.

I just finished writing another fantasy/paranormal story. The good vs. evil plot is central and the "romance" second, but thinking about it, I don't really think of what I wrote as romance. Actually my books read like my real life relationships. I admit I've never truly understood the dynamics of relationships (my own included) that well. I don't get the part about falling in love over time, the slow burn, the uncertainty, the ups and downs, the final realization that you're in love, etc. I've always fallen in love quickly - like within weeks. If me and the other person fit then we fit, and I'm a practical person, too practical sometimes. Of course, that "quick to love" thing tends to bite back hard sometimes. Needless to say, I really like what many term as "insta-love", which for me is just how fast my brain works and how my real life experiences with love have gone. But will it last forever....maybe.

I like to read gay contemporary romance a lot. I love the stories that chronicle the ups and downs of starting, developing and maintaining a relationship in real life with the obstacles and downfalls and the celebration when love wins and continues to win. Authors who can write this type of story are like wizards or magic to me! I wish I could write those types of relationships but without demons and ancient curses and kidnappings and near death climaxes - oh and angst. I love angst!...without all of this stuff my "romance" is lost. With those elements as the focus of my story, the relationship stuff takes a back seat. (That's one of the main complaints I get in reviews). I've come to accept this in my writing but, of course, my inadequate relationship knowledge won't stop me from trying, every once in a while, to write a contemporary romance. Just be prepared for the angst and some insta-love.  :)

Disclaimer: I did say my books read like my real life relationships, but I can assure you there are no kidnappings or curses and the only demon in my life is Speed Demon, lol.

Best wishes,
Jake
