Want to give up? Don't because...

It's been a while since I've written on this blog. I've been busy working on a short story for submission to a Christmas anthology. This one was tough. I wanted to give up so many times writing this story that I lost count. Writing this story was stressful and agonizing—not just because of the subject matter. Trying to get this story to fit the word limit was hard. I tend to keep adding plot points and people and the word count goes into novella territory. I probably cut as many words as the finally words count. I cut scenes, trimmed fluff and threw out superfluous setting descriptions. I know all of you writers out there are saying, “Well, yeah JC, that’s what you do when writing!” I know but I have never written to a specific word count and it almost killed me (maybe a little dramatic). And now that it’s over I loved it! I am starting another story that has to be 10,000 words and I am so excited.
Because I didn’t give up, I ended up with a story about Dain’s journey that has touched the people who read it. They came away feeling good after some tears for Dain’s plight. If I had given up, his story would have found its way to my “incomplete” folder on my computer. I am so glad I didn’t give up!
